Christmas Market Galway - Eyre Square
Similar to those in mainland Europe, the Galway Continental Christmas Market -the first of its kind in the west of Ireland - transformed Eyre Square in the heart of Galway City into a magical winter wonderland.
The atmospheric mini-town land was a gift for the senses featuring traditional Bavarian and Irish Stalls, selling quality goods, to be enjoyed by all the family. Seventy wooden chalets were constructed; retailing food, beverages and goods from all over Europe with over a third of the chalets being occupied by local traders.
Traders from as far afield as Russia to Peru, USA to China, along with a whole range of traders from around Europe, and not forgetting the trader from Lapland, set up stalls in the Christmas Village created by Market Place (Europe) Limited, right in the heart of Galway City.
Daniel Aguirre, who lives part of the year in a small village near Machu Picchu in Peru, sold a great range of knitwear, some of it made from the famous alpaca wool, alongside some Peruvian Crafts.
Jari Makella came from the Finnish part of Lapland some 200 kms north of the Arctic Circle. His stall sold a great range of traditional Lappish crafts, gifts, hats, knitwear, etc.
The Continental Christmas Market in Galway was the place to visit this year for a real Global shopping trip.
The market of course also housed the all important ‘Santa’s Grotto’ with proceeds going to well deserving local charities.
